Travel Europe On A $1,000 Budget
We all have that one friend who loves to travel. You’ve been following her travels on Instagram and wish that you could travel as much as she does. However, we can not deny that money might be a problem. Planning a trip can get very expensive. However, if you do your research ahead of time, you can travel Europe on a $1,000 budget for a month. It is all about the experience and I want to help you get the most out of your trip. Here are somethings that you need to know.

FLIGHTS:
Did you know that the cheapest time to fly in the whole year is the first two weeks in January?
STA Travel
STA Travel is the world’s largest student and youth travel agency. Their flights are usually affordable checkout their website for “student flights, discounted student and youth travel, working holidays, cheap hotel and hostel bookings, travel insurance, discount cards and special offers on tours and packages.” They’ve been around a very long time and have helped thousands of students save money. https://www.statravel.com

As much as you can:
- Travel on the off-seasons
- Make your trip worth the cost of the flight
- Go for a month instead of a week or two.
- Plan ahead don’t buy your ticket the last minute
- Avoid traveling in the summer, it is more expensive
- Pack light to avoid baggage fees
TRANSPORTATION:
Once you get to your destination stay on the ground. What I mean is that use buses, and trains to get around.
- Get an Interrail Global Pass or Eurail Pass where you can take the train at any time to anywhere (discount for youth ages 12-27)
- Download the App for Flixbus, Ouibus or Blablacar (you will save a lot of money)
HOUSING:

Hostels
Hostels are great for solo travelers who just want a place to spend the night. All of the facilities are shared and the rooms are typically dormitory-style. You can also request for single rooms or rooms designed for couples. They even have wifi and lockers for your belongings. Checkout STA for discounts https://www.statravel.com
TrustedHousesitters.com
House sitting is great for travelers who want to stay in an area for several weeks or months. How it works? You exchange to watch and clean someone’s home for them while they are away and you get to stay there for free.
Couchsurfing.com
Couchsurfing allows the locals to give travelers a free place to rest their head for the night (normally on their couch). You’ll get to meet and interact with the locals of that country you are visiting. This is a great way to save money.
You can also take a night train that way you won’t have to spend money on housing.
FOOD

Depending on where you are staying buying groceries and cooking for yourself is the way do it. But if you can’t, there are places that offer you free food when you buy a drink such as Spain, Tapas, and Italy, Aperitivo. Local restaurants tend to be less expensive. Spending $20-$30 on food a day is a good budget.
BUDGET DESTINATION
The cheapest part of Europe is Eastern Europe. Countries like Croatia, Macedonia, Poland, Bulgaria, Serbia, Portugal, Romania, and Spain tend to be less expensive. Also when you visit countries like Italy, France, etc. travel south, it is less expensive.
Get an International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
To get discounts in Europe, you should get an ISIC card. It works as an identity card and discount card for students and non-students. It offers discounts for travel, insurance, hotels, hostels, museums and so much more. I had an ISIC card when I was studying abroad and I was able to save money on hotels and museums. They have a lot of discounts in Europe. Give them a shot https://www.isic.org
OTHER TIPS:
- Get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees
- Don’t use ATMs that are not associated with a bank
- Have cash on you
- Stay away from touristy areas
- Hangout with the locals (couchsurfing is a great way to meet the locals)
- Free stuff is best
- Free walking tours
- Don’t pay for a phone plan, get a sim card
